Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, is an American rapper singer. Queen Latifah's career in music film and television has resulted in her receiving an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught for Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens, Jr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. At the age of 8 Her cousin gifted her stage names Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on her basketball team in high school. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's original group, made up of several MCs as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King created a demo of the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was given to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the tune. The singer signed Latifah and then released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
